Tears of despair turned into smiles of hope for dozens of livestock farmers in Igembe North Sub-County after they began receiving cattle from the National Government to replace animals lost to cattle rustlers and bandit attacks.
Many of the beneficiaries said the restocking programme had renewed their hope of rebuilding their livelihoods after years of devastating losses that left families without their main source of income.
At least 207 cattle have so far been distributed to the first group of beneficiaries under the National Government's livestock restocking programme, with another 800 cattle expected to be handed over to more affected farmers over the next three days.
The exercise is being coordinated by Igembe North MP Julius Taitumu in collaboration with Igembe North Sub-County Police Commander Jerald Marando as part of efforts to cushion families affected by insecurity and revive livestock farming in the region.
Speaking during the distribution exercise, Marando urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report cases of cattle rustling, banditry and other security threats to enable security agencies to respond swiftly and apprehend those responsible.
He said timely reporting would strengthen security operations and improve the protection of residents and their livestock.
Taitumu said the livestock restocking programme demonstrates the National Government's commitment to helping families recover from losses caused by banditry and restore their economic livelihoods.
He urged residents to continue working closely with security agencies, support ongoing operations against bandits and embrace government development initiatives aimed at improving household incomes.
The leaders said they were optimistic the programme would restore hope among affected families while accelerating economic recovery in one of Meru County's regions most affected by cattle rustling and banditry.
