The MP said the affected traders should be compensated for losses arising from the demolition and relocation.

North Imenti MP Rahim Dawood has threatened to lead mass protests if traders affected by the demolition and relocation of Gakoromone Market are not compensated.

Dawood said the demolition was arbitrary and demanded that authorities address losses suffered by traders as they await the construction of the proposed modern market.

He also criticised the contractor for blocking roads around the market, saying the disruption had compounded the difficulties facing traders and residents in the area.

“If the grievances of the traders are not addressed, I will lead them in major protests,” Dawood said.

The MP said the affected traders should be compensated for losses arising from the demolition and relocation, while calling for urgent measures to improve conditions at the temporary trading site.

His remarks come amid growing concern among traders following their relocation to pave the way for construction of the Sh800million modern market.

Dawood also accused some politicians of exploiting the traders’ plight for political mileage, saying the focus should instead be on finding solutions to the challenges facing the business community.

Responding to criticism from North Imenti parliamentary aspirant Carol Muriuki, Dawood dismissed her attacks and questioned her record in improving the local economy.

“Do you want someone who blames me for no apparent reason?” Dawood asked, responding to claims by Muriuki that his main achievement was selling a hotel to President William Ruto.

Dawood defended the sale, saying there was nothing wrong with conducting a business transaction.

“This is business. I have sold the Hart Towers building and the petrol station near Meru Primary,” he said.

Dawood accused Muriuki of failing to do anything to improve the economic welfare of residents.

“She has done totally nothing to uplift the economy of residents,” he said.
