Residents of Keiyo South in Elgeyo Marakwet County are up in arms after area MP Gideon Kimaiyo allegedly assaulted his uncle over political differences.
While recording a statement at Kaptagat Police Station, Benjamin Kimutai, a resident of Kaptarkok, said he was beaten by the MP, sustaining bodily harm.
He said the MP, who was accompanied by over 60 people, used a stick to beat him on the head, accompanied by kicks and blows.
Kimutai said he has been receiving threats from the MP and now fears for his life.
The MP, for the third time now, has been accused of assaulting constituents with contrary opinions.
Youth in the area raised concerns over the use of goons and handouts by the first-term legislator, calling on security agencies to take action against the MP, especially as the country heads to next year's general elections.
"We condemn in the strongest terms any act of violence, arrogance and intimidation from any leader. Such reports tarnish the dignity of Keiyo South leadership," noted Shadrach Kipchirchir from Chororget.
Kipchirchir added that the MP as a legislator should be the one abusing the same laws by assaulting people.
Alex Mangara, an aspirant called for politics of tolerance devoid of goonism.
The DCI officers from Kapatagat police station have so far commenced probe.
According to Kimutai, he had gone Kaptargok School which had been closed where he met the headteacher and the Chairman of the school board.
"The MP held my hand and pulled me outside and ordered people who were with him to beat me up. People stormed into my compound and started hiting me with a stick. I pleaded with him but he could hear nothing of him and punched me," Kimutai said.
He later sought treatment at Chepkorio health centre where he sought treatment and later obtained a P3 form at Kaptagat police station.
"This is not the first term he (Kimaiyo) is attacking him. I don't know why he is after me for just holding a different political opinion from him. He recently brought over 100 goons to my home again accusing me of being a political traitor," Kimutai claimed.
" The MP should watch his temper as a leader. In the last incident, he beat me in front of my wife and small children yet I'm the age of his father. I'm now unable to fend for my family yet I do casual work to make ends meet," Kimutai said.
