Kenya's Malkia Strikers will miss the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games women’s volleyball tournament after Egypt swept aside the defending champions 3-0 in the final of the 2026 CAVB Women’s Africa Nations Championship at Kasarani Indoor Arena, Nairobi on September 4, 2026.
Egypt secured Africa’s sole Olympic ticket with a commanding 25-22, 25-15, 25-15 victory, burying Kenya’s hopes of reaching the Olympic stage. The championship winners were guaranteed Africa’s direct qualification slot for LA 2028.
The loss was a bitter blow for Kenya, who had gone into the final unbeaten like Egypt and were seeking to retain the continental crown in front of a home crowd of 5,000 fans.
Kenya started strongly in the opening set and stayed within striking distance, but Egypt held their nerve to take it 25-22. The visitors then tightened their grip on the contest, comfortably winning the second set 25-15 before completing the sweep with another 25-15 victory in a match that Kenya committed countless errors in service, reception, attack and were porous in the blocks.
The loss means the Malkia Strikers will not extend their Olympic appearances to five. Kenya previously competed at the Games in Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024.
Kenya had reached the final after a superb run in Nairobi. They pipped Nigeria 3-0 in the round of 16, recovered from a set down to beat Algeria 3-1 in the quarter-finals and humbled Cameroon 3-0 in the semi-finals.
Despite missing out on the Olympic ticket, Kenya secured qualification for the 2027 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship by reaching the final. Egypt had also booked their World Championship place before the title showdown.
The championship returned to Kenya for the first time since 2015, with Nairobi hosting the continent’s top women’s volleyball nations at Kasarani Indoor Arena and Ulinzi Sports Complex.
Meanwhile, Cameroon bagged the bronze medal after trouncing Rwanda 3-0 in the third-place playoff.
Cameroon dominated the match 25-17, 25-16, 25-19 to finish third, while Rwanda settled for fourth place.
The bronze-medal finish also earned Cameroon qualification for the 2027 World Championship, joining champions Egypt and runners-up Kenya as Africa’s three representatives at the tournament to be jointly hosted by the United States and Canada.
For Kenya, however, the home championship ended with the disappointment of surrendering their African crown and losing the opportunity to qualify directly for the 2028 Olympics.
