National volleyball kings and Mozzart Kenya Cup bronze medalists Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) are among the clubs providing the backbone of the provisional Wafalme Strikers squad selected to represent Kenya at the 2026 Men’s African Volleyball Championship in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.
On Monday, the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) named a 20-man provisional squad for the continental championships, which will be held from September 7-21.
The Kenyan players are expected to begin preparations on Wednesday, August 12.
The provisional team will assemble at Nyayo National Stadium at 8:00am for the initial training camp as Wafalme begin their preparations for the continental showpiece.
KPA have provided five players to the provisional squad. They include setters Felex Otieno, outside hitter Denis Omollo and opposite attackers Enock Mogeni and Peter Kamara, as well as middle blocker Brian Kamonde.
General Service Unit (GSU), who were crowned the 2026 Mozzart Kenya Cup champions after thumping Chema VC 3-0 in the final at Kasarani Indoor Arena, have also supplied a strong contingent.
From the paramilitary side are setter Brian Melly, libero Hudson Kipchumba, middle blockers Simion Kipkorir and Victor Cheruiyot, and outside hitters Nicholas Matui and Joshua Kimaru.
Prisons Kenya have contributed setter Kelvin Maiyo, middle blocker Rollings Juma and outside hitter Denis Esogon, while Chema have Levis Ogutu and Moses Kamau among the middle blockers.
The other clubs represented are Administration Police, through libero Stephen Baraka; Equity Bank, through middle blocker Wilson Cheruiyot; KAPU, through middle blocker Felex Ogembo; and Kenya Defence Forces, through outside hitter Moses Macharia.
The setters are Maiyo, Melly and Otieno, while Baraka and Kipchumba will provide the options in the libero position.
The middle-blocking department comprises Ogutu, Kipkorir, Cheruiyot, Kamonde, Ogembo, Victor Cheruiyot, Juma and Kamau.
The outside hitters are Esogon, Matui, Omollo, Kimaru and Macharia, with Mogeni and Kamara listed as opposite attackers.
The technical bench comprises Gideon Tarus from GSU, Denis Mokua of Prisons Kenya and Elisha Aliwa from KDF.
Kenya will use the August camp to assess the players and build a competitive side ahead of the African championship, with the final squad expected to be selected from the provisional list.
The 2026 Men’s African Volleyball Championship will run for two weeks in Kinshasa, with Kenya joining the other qualified teams in the continental battle for honours and a place at Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The Gambia, Nigeria, Central African Republic, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
The highest-ranked team at the conclusion of the championship will earn Africa’s direct quota place for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The three highest-ranked teams not already qualified will secure qualification for the 2027 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup.
