Manyatta MP John Gitonga Mukunji has called on the National Police Service and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to conduct independent and impartial investigations after several officers were seen near his rural home since Sunday.
He described the presence as intimidation following the Nembure Grounds incident in which lives were lost and vehicles were torched.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s event was disrupted by alleged goons.
Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua and Manyatta MP Mukunji, who is eyeing the Embu gubernatorial seat, claimed that those beaten in the melee were residents who had thronged the stadium hoping to receive a share of the “attendance fee” at the empowerment event attended by United Democratic Alliance (UDA) chairperson and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire.
Through the law firm Ndegwa & Ndegwa Associates, MP Mukunji is demanding an end to what he alleges is intimidation by the Executive and the National Police.
He pointed to contradictory statements from NPS Spokesperson Nyagah Muchiri and Government Spokesperson Charles Owino.
During an interview on Citizen TV Kenya, Owino said on Monday that Mukunji was under investigation over the events at Nembure Grounds, while the NPS had stated that no investigation was being pursued against him.
Mukunji has instructed his lawyers to inform the police and DCI that intimidation targeting him and his family, including school-going children, is unfair and unacceptable.
He maintained his innocence, stating that he was not involved in any way with the violence at Nembure Grounds in Embu and that he fully supports independent and impartial investigations to establish the facts.
He also accused Prof Kindiki of having issued a shoot-to-kill order while serving as Interior Cabinet Secretary during the Gen Z uprising in 2024.
