Former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s proposed appointment to a deputy party leader position in Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi Movement has sparked excitement among her supporters, who say the move elevates her political influence beyond the county.
Buuri parliamentary aspirant John Kinoti described the development as a major milestone for Meru, dismissing claims that Mwangaza’s association with the movement had left supporters of her Umoja na Maendeleo Party (UMP) without a political home.
“I want to categorically state that our party leader is strong, the party is strong and powerful, only that she has been promoted to being a national party leader,” Kinoti said.
He maintained that Mwangaza remained their political leader and urged supporters from Mt Kenya East to unite behind Linda Mwananchi and its presidential candidate, Sifuna.
“Our leader is none other than Mwangaza, but we are partners in Linda Mwananchi fully supporting presidential candidate Edwin Sifuna. Mama anatosha ama hatoshi?” he said.
Sifuna announced the proposed leadership structure on Friday, naming Mwangaza alongside former Law Society of Kenya president Faith Odhiambo and Mavoko MP Patrick Makau for deputy party leader positions. A fourth slot has been reserved for a representative from the Coast region.
The proposed appointments are expected to be presented to delegates for consideration at the movement’s National Delegates Convention scheduled for November 13.
Mwangaza welcomed the announcement in a Facebook post, thanking Sifuna and her supporters for their encouragement.
“The strongest people aren’t always the people who win, but the people who don’t give up when they lose,” she wrote.
“Thank you for your support, prayers and wishes. Thank you, my H.E and Boss (Sifuna). Thank you, God is gracious. We have not abandoned, we have strengthened,” she added.
Kinoti called on leaders to embrace servant leadership, arguing that political positions should be built on sacrifice, commitment and service to the community rather than the expectation of being handed opportunities.
He said Mwangaza had demonstrated dedication to public service, earning the trust of Meru residents who elected her governor.
He urged aspiring leaders to engage in community work and volunteer their time even before seeking elective positions, saying genuine leadership should be driven by the desire to serve.
Kinoti also thanked Sifuna for recognising Mwangaza and called on supporters across Mt Kenya East to rally behind Linda Mwananchi as it builds its national presence ahead of the 2027 General Election.
