Samburu Senator Lelegwe Ltumbesi and his Kajiado counterpart, Senator Lenku Seki Ole Kanar, have condemned the killing of livestock belonging to Samburu pastoralists, allegedly by people suspected to be police officers.
Speaking to journalists separately in Malindi, where senators are holding sittings under the Senate Mashinani programme, Senator Seki criticised the Interior Ministry for what he termed failure to control police officers accused of killing both people and livestock.
He also criticised the Samburu Governor, accusing him of allegedly failing to address the plight of residents while allegedly spending more time supporting the national government.
“The government must take responsibility and ensure that the security agencies protect both human life and property, including livestock,” said Seki.
Meanwhile, Senator Lelegwe has called on President William Ruto to intervene and end the escalating situation, saying livestock remains a major source of livelihood for the Samburu community.
“Our people depend on livestock as their main source of livelihood. We cannot remain silent as hundreds of animals are killed and lives are lost,” said Lelegwe.
The senator claimed that more than 500 livestock had been killed over the past three days, with several people also losing their lives, as police officers were accused of using firearms meant to protect citizens against them.
