Detectives in Limuru Sub-county have apprehended seven suspects they termed as notorious criminals, who it is alleged they have been robbing, gang-raping women and injuring motorists, pedestrians and cyclists in tea estates.
The suspected criminals are said to be waylaying motorists who pull over their vehicles to watch the beautiful tea plantations.
Other victims are people who visit the plantations and relax on the grass at the roadside of the Mabroukie to Limuru road.
The worst part of it is that the suspects do not spare women and girls from rape.
The suspects, who have been driving a car, stop at a place where they spot people pretending to be enjoying the beautiful views of the tea too, and within a few minutes, they attack the people, threatening to kill them.
Limuru Sub-county police commander Mary Gachie confirmed that many cases of gang rape, robbery and assault by tea estate visitors have been reported at Tigoni Police Station and also at Limuru Town Police Station.
“This is a dangerous criminal gang. They attack people with crude weapons. Once they attack a group of people, they hit some victims, especially men, with metal bars so as to make them fear and others lose focus, and at that time, they rape women and girls. They rob them and vanish,” she said.
Speaking at Limuru Town Police Station on Wednesday, Gachie said that she had formed a team of both regular officers and sleuths from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, who followed them up until they nabbed them.
As investigations were ongoing, the detectives discovered the vehicle the criminal gang was using and nabbed it too.
While accompanied by Sub-county DCI Alenga Gimwani, Tigoni OCS Cathrine Mundanya, Mutarakwa OCS Farah Mohammed and other senior officers, Gachie warned that they had intensified day and night patrols so as to eradicate cases of locals being attacked by thugs.
The Sub-county police commander revealed that one of the criminals is a convict who was released on a Presidential pardon, while another had escaped from remand.
She said the suspect who ran away from remand had been taken to court for a mention of a case in which he is alleged to have raped a relative, but he jumped out of the court cells and ran away.
“A warrant of arrest was issued and the case has been mentioned several times,” she said.
“The suspects who have been positively identified by some complainants will face several charges. We are urging other people who have been robbed to visit our police stations, especially Limuru Town, for instructions,” she advised.
A resident, Peter Mungai, applauded the police for their patrols since motorists have been complaining of being robbed by a criminal gang.
“You cannot walk alone on the tea plantations road. The worst part is Mabroukie, Nazareth junction, and a section with grass where musicians come to record music as other people come to relax and bask in the sun,” Mungai said.
