Investigators allege the pair conspired to kill Mbaabu over a longstanding land dispute.

North Imenti MP Rahim Dawood has urged detectives and prosecutors to build a watertight murder case after police arrested two more suspects over the killing of his former staff member, 65-year-old Evelyne Mukiri Mbaabu, bringing the number of suspects in custody to three.

Dawood, whose office Mbaabu worked for before her death, praised Meru County Criminal Investigations Officer (CCIO) and his team for pursuing the case but cautioned that those behind the killing should not escape justice.

“Considering that the first accused was allegedly acquitted in 2018 in a murder case dating back to 2013, I urge the investigating agencies and prosecution to build a watertight case that will ensure those responsible do not escape justice. Evelyne Mukiri Mbaabu and her family deserve justice,” Dawood wrote on his Facebook page.

The latest suspects are Godwin Kimathi, the deceased's brother, and Beth Muthomi, the sister of the first accused, Solomon Kathurima Kairemia, and sister-in-law to the deceased.

According to police, Kimathi was arrested at Bonyeine village on September 30, while Muthomi was arrested on October 19. Detectives said forensic analysis, witness statements and call data records linked the two to the murder.

Investigators allege the pair conspired to kill Mbaabu over a longstanding land dispute and enlisted Kairemia to execute the attack. Police also claim the suspects remained in constant communication before and after the killing.

The two were arraigned before the Meru Law Courts on October 29, where the court ordered they be remanded at Meru GK Prison pending mental assessment and plea taking.

Their arrest follows that of Kairemia, who was apprehended on September 21 after weeks of forensic and intelligence-led investigations by officers from the CCIO's office and DCI Imenti North.

At the time, detectives said Kairemia had abandoned his home and was hiding in nearby thickets. They also recovered a blood-stained panga believed to have been used in the attack before charging him with murder.

Mbaabu was hacked to death at her home in Kithoka village, Imenti East, on August 7 while preparing supper with her 13-year-old grandson.

Police said an unknown man entered the compound and asked for drinking water before attacking her. Moments later, the boy heard his grandmother scream and found her lying in a pool of blood.

The attacker also slashed the boy's hand with a panga before fleeing.

Mbaabu was rushed to Grace Park Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
