Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has urged Kenyans to remain vigilant following the death of the country’s first confirmed Ebola patient, as announced by the Ministry of Health.
Speaking during a development tour in Wamunyu Ward, Mwala constituency on Tuesday, the Governor implored residents of Machakos and Kenyans at large to observe the necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the virus.
“I urge the people of Machakos and all Kenyans to be careful and ensure that the disease does not spread within our county and the country. Do not touch anyone showing symptoms of the illness. If you develop any symptoms, seek medical attention immediately. If you notice someone else displaying symptoms, do not touch them; instead, call for medical assistance,” Ndeti said.
Governor Ndeti stated that the County Government of Machakos has already established a quarantine centre and implemented measures to enhance preparedness, while urging residents to maintain high standards of hygiene.
In addition to health concerns, the governor called on the national government—through the Ministry of Transport and the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA)—to install adequate road signage, particularly along the Machakos–Kitui Road, to help curb a rising number of road accidents.
“Accidents have increased, with more than 4,000 cases reported so far. Recently, a woman died in a road accident while traveling with her husband on a motorbike along the Machakos–Kitui Road. Furthermore, Catholic Church faithful traveling to Subukia also lost their lives in a tragic crash. KeNHA needs to erect adequate signage along the road to warn motorists and other road users,” the governor said.
Governor Ndeti further urged the national government to fast-track the expansion of Mombasa Road into a dual carriageway, citing the high number of accidents associated with traffic congestion along the busy transport corridor.
She emphasized that the highway is critical to Kenya’s economy and called for the swift implementation of expansion plans initiated by former President Uhuru Kenyatta to improve its safety and efficiency.
