Deputy President Prof Kithure Kindiki on Tuesday announced that he will convene a meeting of Mt Kenya political leaders from all political divides to explore ways of ending goon-related violence that is rearing its ugly head in the region during political events.
The political goonism has been putting locals a lot fear especially when there is a gathering like a funeral, wedding, church services, public meeting and politicians happens to attend.
Speaking at Banana Town in Kiambaa Constituency, Kiambu County, Prof Kindiki said he will be taking the initiative in furtherance of the mandate he was given by council of elders from communities in the region to spearhead unity, reconciliation and development in Mt. Kenya region and the whole country of Kenya.
"I recently had a meeting with elders from communities from the Mountain. We discussed so many issues and among them is uniting the region, by so doing, we shall deal with a way of ending goonism which is being noted," he said.
The deputy president added that since the advent of multi-partism in Kenya, the Mt Kenya region has always had competing leaders at the national level but never again has the ugly incidents of political goonism been witnessed in the region and he will lead in ending it.
Kindiki said as a way of leading by example, he now desists from responding to opposition leaders from Mt Kenya who incessantly disparage him and has forgiven those leaders unreservedly.
"I have been insulted in the public. I have been called names and allegations made against me. Due to the love of unity, I hearby forgive all those who have insulted me," he said.
"To add on that, I will also not respond to any insult from politicians. The more we respond to them, the more we put at risk our unity" Prof Kindiki said.
He was with area MP Njuguna Kawanjiku and others such as Lari MP Mburu Kahangara and Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a who expressed their confidence in Kindiki’s leadership and pledged to support his bid of succeeding William Ruto as the president of Kenya when he retires.
