Legacy Football Academy etched their name into East African football history after becoming the first team from the region to lift a Gothia Cup title, stunning Swedish hosts Lerums IS 1-0 in the Boys Under-14 final in Gothenburg on Saturday, July 18, 2026.
An early goal by David Jesse in the 10th minute proved decisive as the Kenyan youngsters capped an outstanding campaign with a landmark victory, marking one of the greatest achievements by an East African academy at the prestigious youth tournament.
Legacy sealed the title following an impressive run that saw them dominate the group stage before dispatching opponents from three continents in the knockout rounds.
Competing in Group 13, the academy launched its campaign with a huge 4-0 win over IF Centern Vit before thrashing Solangens BK 7-1. They then overwhelmed IFK Nykoping 1 by the same emphatic 7-0 scoreline and wrapped up the preliminary phase with a 3-0 win over Virestad IF, advancing to the knockout rounds with a flawless record.
The Kenyan side maintained their momentum in the elimination stages.
They humbled Argentina's CEF 18 Tucuman 3-1 in the quarter-finals before seeing off Ghana's ProGen FC 3-0 in the semi-finals to set up a title showdown against the hosts.
In the final, Jesse struck inside the opening 10 minutes, and Legacy's disciplined backline protected the lead for the remainder of the contest to chalk up a famous victory.
The triumph completed a remarkable tournament in which the academy excelled at both ends of the pitch, scoring freely while conceding only two goals throughout the competition.
Solomon Velenga emerged as Legacy's top scorer with nine goals, while Jesse finished with seven. Vincent Fredrick also played a key attacking role, contributing five goals as the Kenyan outfit established itself among the tournament's highest-scoring teams.
Legacy also impressed in the other age-group competitions in Sweden.
The Under-13 team topped their group after registering four victories, one draw and one defeat, with Brivon Nyandika, Jack Weko and Gavin Okech finishing as their leading scorers.
The Under-12 boys ended second in their pool on six points, led in attack by Mwangi Njenga, Zandro Obiero and Elijah Luusa.
The Under-16 side also finished second in their group after recording two wins and two defeats from four matches, with Innocent Media, Mohammed Mbemba and Cyril Obiero emerging as the team's leading marksmen.
Now in its 51st edition, the Gothia Cup is the world's biggest international youth football tournament. Hosted every year by Swedish club BK Häcken, this year's competition attracted a record 1,956 teams from 78 countries, with more than 45,300 players and officials taking part in a week-long football festival across Gothenburg.
