The Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) and the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) have renewed their commitment to working together to promote quality sports journalism and improve coverage of Team Kenya at major international competitions.
The commitment was made on Thursday, July 9, 2026, during a high-level meeting in Nairobi between the leadership of the two organizations, where they discussed ways of enhancing transparency, professionalism and structured co-operation between sports administrators and the media.
Both parties acknowledged the crucial role played by sports journalists in promoting the growth of sports, increasing fan engagement, documenting athletes’ achievements and showcasing Kenya’s sporting success globally.
As the umbrella body representing sports journalists in the country, SJAK continues to advocate for professional standards while partnering with sports institutions to promote accurate, credible and impactful reporting.
One of the key agreements reached during the meeting was the involvement of SJAK in the selection of media representatives who will accompany Team Kenya to major international events, including the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, Winter Olympics and Youth Olympics, among others.
NOCK president Shadrack Maluki said the decision would enhance transparency and strengthen relations between the Olympic body and the media fraternity.
“After a meeting with the SJAK top brass today, we agreed that by virtue of the Association being the umbrella body of all sports journalists in the country, they would be involved in nominating the Media Liaison and possible Media Team of Team Kenya in all NOCK events,” said Maluki.
SJAK president James Waindi welcomed the partnership, terming it a significant step towards closer collaboration between the sports movement and journalists.
Waindi explained that sports journalists are key stakeholders in the development of sport and that a structured engagement framework would ensure Team Kenya receives professional, credible and co-ordinated media coverage at global competitions.
He added that SJAK remains committed to working with sports federations, government agencies, sponsors and other stakeholders to create opportunities that support sports development and improve the welfare and professional growth of journalists.
SJAK secretary general Moses Wakhisi noted that the agreement highlights the importance of continued dialogue and strategic partnerships in building stronger sports institutions.
He urged members to maintain active participation in the Association and uphold high professional standards as SJAK continues positioning itself as a trusted partner in Kenya’s sporting landscape.
The two organizations noted that strong partnerships between sports bodies and the media are essential in promoting accountability, increasing visibility of athletes, attracting investment and ensuring fans receive reliable and timely information.
