African Games singles champion Angella Okutoyi will seek to carry the momentum from a dramatic doubles victory into the singles draw when she launches her W35 Aldershot onslaught against Britain's Kristina Paskauskas today Wednesday.
The 22-year-old Kenyan advanced to the doubles quarter-finals on Tuesday after teaming up with Briton Brooke Black to beat Naiktha Bains and Sayaka Ishii of Japan 2-6, 6-3, 13-11 in a tense first-round encounter.
Okutoyi, who recently relocated to the UK to pursue a full-time professional career with sponsorship from Swiss sportswear company On, will begin her singles campaign at 1:30p.m. against Paskauskas.
The Kenyan has fond memories of the matchup, having trounced the Briton 5-7, 6-3, 10-8 in their only previous meeting at the W25 Florence tournament in the United States in 2023.
Victory would send Okutoyi into the second round against fourth seed Rina Saigo of Japan.
Meanwhile, Okutoyi's training partner Brooke Black has already secured a place in the singles second round after outwitting Savannah Dada-Mascoll 7-5, 6-4 in Tuesday's round of 32 match.
Okutoyi has been training under Zimbabwe-born coach Wayne Black, Brooke's father, since moving to Britain as she continues her transition to the professional circuit.
The former Wimbledon junior doubles champion is aiming to build on a strong 2026 season that included winning both W35 Nairobi singles and doubles titles and shining in her final year at Auburn University in USA, as she continues her hunt to improve her career-best WTA singles ranking of 414.
