Former Migori Governor Okoth Obado, his former personal aide Michael Oyamo and a former county employee all convicted over the violent, brutal and heinous murder of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno, will know their fate on September 16, 2026.
On this date, Justice Cecilia Githua will receive their mitigations then hand down either a death sentence, life imprisonment or a custodial sentence depending on what they say in their mitigations.
But the most striking report is that the family of Sharon is willing to reconcile with the family of Obado, who is currently detained at Kamiti maximum prison awaiting sentence.
According to a victims impact statement filed in court by the Probation and Aftercare Services, Sharon's parents said they had no hard feelings towards Obado’s family and hoped that efforts to reconcile the two families could continue.
According to the report, Sharon's family and that of Obado met in August where they covered some ground towards reconciliation.
In the terse report, Sharon's family floated some issues to do with what Obado had promised their daughter - to buy her some property in Homa Bay.
During their relation, Sharon had asked the former governor to buy her some property worth KES 25 million.
According to the probation officer, the deceased's family members are willing to reconcile while fixing their eyes on logistical support for Sharon's three other children aged 12, 10 and 8.
In the report, the parents of Sharon state they incurred huge costs to attend the hearing for seven years and 10 months.
They claim they spent KES 1.2 million for her burial and another KES 3.5 million for other expenses.
Justice Githua in her judgment said Obado was the beneficiary of the murder of Sharon.
She was raped and murdered alongside her 28 weeks old unborn baby on the night of September 3, 2018, at Owade Forest in Homa Bay County.
Sharon was allegedly lured to her death by Oyamo, who prosecution said he claimed he wanted to relay a message from Obado only to hand her over to her killers.
