The development leaves Kenya with one fewer athlete than initially planned after the entry system for the Games had already closed.

Team Kenya’s contingent for the 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, is set to drop from 54 athletes to 53 after one competitor was ruled ineligible to participate.

Winfred Mukami, who was entered for the wushu taolu discipline, failed to meet the eligibility threshold set by the International Federation (IF) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

“We have moved from 54 to 53 because one of the athletes that had been presented has been declared unable to participate in the Games in terms of eligibility,” said our source who explained that the decision followed feedback from the international federation and the IOC during a meeting held a few days ago.

The development leaves Kenya with one fewer athlete than initially planned after the entry system for the Games had already closed, making it impossible for the country to replace the disqualified competitor.

“We have unfortunately lost that slot,” explained the source, adding that the team had been forced to accept the reduction because the registration system was no longer open.

The affected athlete was Kenya’s sole representative in wushu taolu, meaning the discipline will no longer feature in the country’s planned contingent.

Despite the setback, the source expressed excitement over Kenya’s participation, describing the team as the country’s biggest-ever contingent for the Youth Olympic Games and the second-largest delegation expected in Dakar.

Taolu is a traditional Chinese martial arts routine combining combat techniques, athletic movement, strength, and precision. Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games will mark Wushu's historic debut at the Youth Olympics.
Mukami qualified after competing in Egypt and the 10th World Junior Championships in China, as well as selection events in Kenya.

Kenya was set to compete in 13 disciplines, including athletics, baseball5, basketball 3x3, boxing, cycling, fencing, judo, women’s rugby sevens, triathlon, beach handball, beach wrestling, swimming and wushu.

The athletics team will feature both male and female competitors, while baseball5 will have a mixed team. Kenya will field a women’s team in rugby sevens.

The Dakar 2026 Games are expected to provide a platform for young athletes to gain international experience and showcase their talent against some of the world’s best emerging competitors.

Although the eligibility ruling has reduced Kenya’s numbers, the team management remains upbeat about the country’s prospects at the Games.
