Two men were on Wednesday charged with trafficking cocaine valued at a total of KES 3.9 million.
Hilton Gocho Chopeta and Mohamed Jabir Ali, who appeared before Mombasa Principal Magistrate David Odhiambo, were also charged with conspiracy to trafficking narcotic drugs.
The accused denied the charges and were remanded in custody pending filing of a pre-bail report within 14 days.
The court heard that Mr Chopeta allegedly trafficked by conveying 734.9 grams of cocaine with a market value of KES 2.9 million.
It is alleged that Mr Ali trafficked by storing 256.4 grams of cocaine with a market value of KES 1 million.
The accused were also alleged to have jointly and with others not before court jointly conspired to traffick cocaine.
The offences are alleged to have been committed on diverse dates between July 15 and 16 2026 in Mombasa.
The prosecution opposed the release of the accused on bond saying they are people of means who are likely to interfere with investigations.
The prosecutor urged the court to have the case heard while the accused are in custody.
However,the accused through their lawyer urged the court to release them on bond saying there are no compelling reasons to deny them (bond).
The defence lawyer further said that the court has not been told how the freedom of the accused will interfere with investigations.
The case will be mentioned on August 5 when the court will issue directions.
