Four death-row armed robbers, convicted of robbery, have been found guilty of murdering former Kabete MP George Muchai, his two drivers and two bodyguards eleven years ago.
Milimani High Court Judge Kanyi Kimondo ruled on September 29, 2026, that Eric Mungera Isabwa, Raphael Kimani Gachii, Mustafa Kimani Anyoni and Stephen Astiva Lipopo are guilty of murdering the four.
"This court convicts you of the offence of murdering Muchai and three others in 2015. The evidence presented by the prosecution links you directly to the heinous killing of Muchai, a former Kabete MP and former deputy secretary general of COTU-Kenya," ruled Justice Kanyi.
Justice Kimondo said the charges against them were proven beyond reasonable doubt.
The four were facing four counts of murder over the deaths of Muchai, his two police bodyguards, Constable Samuel Kimathi Kailikia and Constable Samuel Lekakeny Matanta, and his driver, Stephen Ituu Wambugu.
In his judgment, Justice Kimondo said the prosecution had established that the four accused jointly committed the murders on the night of February 6 and February 7, 2015, along Kenyatta Avenue in Nairobi.
"In the upshot, the Republic has proved beyond any reasonable doubt that on the night of 6th and 7th February 2015, along Kenyatta Avenue within Nairobi, the four accused persons jointly murdered Hon. George Muchai, Police Constable Samuel Kimathi, Police Constable Samuel Lekakeny and Stephen Ituu," the judge ruled.
He added, "I therefore find all four accused persons guilty on all four counts of murder and convict them accordingly."
Justice Kimondo had, in September 2025, ruled that the four had a case to answer, after finding that the prosecution had established a case against them.
Three other suspects who had initially been charged alongside them — Jane Wanjiru Kamau, Margaret Njeri Wachiuri and Simon Wambugu Gichamba — were acquitted in the murder proceedings after the court found that the evidence was insufficient to require them to defend the charges.
One prosecution witness, police officer Sergeant Moses Otiu Opiyo, previously testified that Muchai and the three other occupants of his vehicle were shot at close range.
The witness also linked a G3 rifle recovered during the investigation to a firearm that had earlier been stolen from a police officer.
Justice Kimondo said that prior to the fatal shooting of Muchai, the convicts had committed a series of car-jackings and robberies, all reported at various police stations within Nairobi.
The defence teams contested the prosecution's evidence.
Muchai was serving as Kabete MP when he was killed. He was attacked along Kenyatta Avenue when he stopped to buy newspapers near GPO together with his two police bodyguards and his driver on February 7, 2015.
The murder proceedings were conducted simultaneously with a robbery-with-violence case arising from offences committed during the same period.
In that separate case, the four men were convicted of robbery with violence and were sentenced to death by Milimani Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina in April 2026.
The robbery case involved three robbery incidents on the nights of February 6 and 7, 2015, during which property valued at about KES 1.1 million was stolen.
The four were remanded in custody awaiting sentencing after they mitigate.
