KCB Rugby Club continued their remarkable dominance of Kenya’s sevens rugby scene by capturing a record fifth successive Kabeberi Sevens title after mauling Strathmore Leos 14-12 in a closely contested final at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi on Sunday.
The victory was KCB’s seventh overall Kabeberi crown in the tournament’s 37th edition and further strengthened the position of the Bankers as the 2026 National Sevens Circuit enters its decisive stages.
The Ruaraka-based side began their title defence with a narrow 10-7 quarter-final victory over Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad before destroying Kenya Harlequin 26-7 in the semi-final.
KCB started the final brightly, with Brian Wahinya winning possession from a ruck and releasing Kenya Shujaa captain George Ooro, who powered over under the posts. Wahinya converted for a 7-0 lead.
The Bankers extended their advantage when Vincent Onyala created an opening on the right and set up Michael Wekesa, who crossed the whitewash for their second try. Wahinya added the extras to make it 14-0.
Strathmore hit back through Gabriel Ayimba, who broke through on the right to score, with Arnold Muita converting to cut the deficit to 12-7.
Ayimba struck again before the interval after Victor Mola found him on the right flank. The Shujaa international beat his markers to complete his brace, although the conversion went wide for 14-12 at halftime.
The second half was an intense contest as both teams mounted attacks, but KCB’s disciplined defence stood firm against sustained Strathmore pressure.
Coach Andrew Amonde praised his players for remaining composed under pressure.
“It was a tough final and Strathmore really pushed us, but the boys showed character. We spoke about staying disciplined and trusting our defence, and that is what ultimately won us the game. Winning five titles in a row is a big achievement, but we know there is still more work to do,” noted Amonde.
Onyala credited the squad’s unity and adherence to their game plan.
“We knew Strathmore would come at us strongly, especially in the second half. We had to stay calm, defend together and believe in each other. It was not an easy game, but we dug deep and got the result we wanted,” he explained.
The National Sevens Circuit now moves to Mombasa for the fourth leg on August 22-23 at Mombasa Sports Club, with KCB aiming to maintain their challenge for the overall title.
