Reigning Sportpesa National Sevens Circuit champions KCB Rugby will be aiming to make a strong statement when they kick off their title defence at the Prinsloo Sevens in Nakuru this weekend.
The bankers head into the opening leg of the six-leg circuit determined to improve their performances at the tournament, where they came second in Prinsloo after falling 26-7 to Strathmore Leos in the Main Cup final.
Speaking during a training session at the KCB Sports Club in Ruaraka, Nairobi on Thursday, Head Coach Andrew Amonde said: “We are excited to get back into competitive rugby and begin another National Sevens Circuit campaign. The players have put in a tremendous amount of work during pre-season, and the focus now is to translate that preparation into strong performances on the pitch. We know the competition will be tough from the very first tournament, but our ambition is to start the season positively and challenge for the Prinsloo Sevens title.”
KCB enjoyed one of their most successful sevens campaigns last season, culminating in a historic overall circuit triumph.
Amonde's charges sealed the 2025 National Sevens Circuit title at the Dala Sevens in Kisumu, where they humbled bitter rivals Kabras Sugar from Kakamega County 12-5 in the final to lift the tournament trophy and confirm their status as circuit champions.
The victory crowned a remarkable season in which KCB amassed a record-breaking 126 points to finish at the summit of the 2025 SportPesa National Sevens Circuit standings, underlining their consistency across all six legs of the competition.
“Winning the overall circuit last season was a special achievement for everyone involved with the club, but that is now behind us. Every new season presents fresh challenges and new opportunities. We know what it takes to compete at the highest level, and the objective is to begin strongly at Prinsloo Sevens. The team is hungry, focused, and determined to fight for the title this weekend,” noted captain Elvis Olukusi.
The team has been bolstered by the KCB arrival of Kenyan internationals Nygel Amaitsa from Strathmore Leos and David Nyangige from Impala RFC.
Both of them may make their debuts this weekend for the bankers.
After the Prinsloo Sevens, action will quickly shift to Kisumu for the Dala Sevens, scheduled for August 1 - 2, 2026.
