SportPesa Head of Partnerships and Sponsorships Japheth Akhulia has hailed the increasingly unpredictable results in the 2026 SportPesa National Sevens Circuit after Kabras Sugar rallied from 5-0 down to beat KCB Rugby 15-5 and win the Driftwood Sevens title in Mombasa on Sunday, August 23, 2026.
Akhulia noted that the closely fought results showed the circuit was achieving its purpose of creating a highly competitive platform for local clubs while attracting international participation.
“Every leg gets harder to call, and that's the whole point,” said Akhulia after the awards ceremony.
“Driftwood Sevens has delivered another proof that this circuit has teeth and every team is here to compete.”
He added that SportPesa was pleased to keep expanding opportunities for local clubs, while Uganda Emerging Sevens’ return after a 13-year absence demonstrated the circuit’s growing regional appeal.
Kabras Sugar produced a stunning second-half comeback to claim their second title in four legs and revive their challenge for the overall crown.
Festus Shiasi had put the Bankers 5-0 ahead shortly before half-time, but sugarmillers Kabras responded after the break through Griffin Chao, who scored two tries, and Kevin Wekesa added another try to seal a 15-5 victory.
The result also avenged Kabras’ 19-12 defeat by KCB in the Prinsloo Sevens final in Nakuru. Defending circuit champions KCB now lead Kabras by just two points with two legs - Christie Sevens and Embu Sevens - remaining.
KCB survived a dramatic semi-final against Menengai Oilers, winning 10-5 in sudden death. Beldad Ogeta had given Oilers a 5-0 lead in stoppage time before Shiasi levelled. Emmanuel Opondo missed the conversion that would have won the match in regulation time, sending it into sudden death, where Olympian Vincent Onyala scored the winning try.
Kakamega-based Kabras reached the final after shutting out Daystar Falcons from Machakos County 19-0, while Falcons mauled Nakuru-based Oilers 21-5 in the third-place playoff.
Kabras received Sh150,000, KCB Sh75,000 and Falcons Sh40,000.
Uganda Emerging 7s came fifth after defeating Nondescripts 19-14, with Malcolm Okello scoring all Uganda’s points.
The circuit now takes a one-weekend break before the Embu Sevens on September 5-6, followed by the Christie Sevens on September 12-13 at RFUEA Grounds, Nairobi.
