A year after the tragic, violent and cold-blooded murder of lawyer Kyalo Mbobu, two police officers, a rider and a man who allegedly traced the movements of the prominent city lawyer were on Friday arraigned at Milimani.
Police officers Julius Cheruiyot and Kennedy Kipkemei appeared before Milimani chief magistrate Alfred Gethi Kibiru.
The court was told that lawyer Mbobu was killed in a commando style by well-trained persons.
Besides Cheruiyot, based at Pangani Police Station, and Kipkemei, the others presented in court were Nicholas Naula Lemiso and Noah Kipkurui Langat.
Lemiso allegedly took Cheruiyot to the scene and evacuated him after he fired eight fatal bullets at Mbobu.
The court further heard that Langat had been surveilling Mbobu and communicated with Cheruiyot, who used his Ceska pistol to kill the lawyer in cold blood.
Mr Kibiru was also informed that Kipkemei planned how the execution of the lawyer would be carried out.
“The fourth respondent coordinated and meticulously planned the death of lawyer Kyalo Mbobu alongside one murder suspect, Rose Mbithe Mulwa, alias Rose Mbithe Ndetei, who is detained over the heinous murder of her former co-wife, Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, on July 29, 2026,” a prosecutor told the magistrate.
All four will be charged with murdering lawyer Mbobu on September 9, 2025.
The court further heard that the deceased lawyer was defending a top psychiatrist, Prof David Musyimi Ndetei, in a KES 1.5 billion land dispute at the Machakos High Court involving Ms Mulwa and her former husband.
Ms Mulwa lost the land dispute, and police believe the dispute could be a motive for the gangland murders of both lawyer Mbobu and Dr Mutiso, a former clinical psychiatrist.
Ms Mulwa, her two children Chris and Angella (both lawyers) were arrested alongside seven others, among them police officers, over the brutal murder of Dr Mutiso.
They will be charged on September 29, 2026, over the violent and heinous killing of Dr Mutiso.
Prosecuting counsel Hilary Isiaho and Mr Kiragu told the court that the elimination of the law scholar and author was meticulously planned and executed.
“Although these investigations have lasted for a year, police efforts have borne fruit and eventually the four were arrested on Thursday,” Mr Kiragu stated while seeking to have the four detained for 30 days to enable police to complete the investigations.
The magistrate was told that the case does not involve ordinary thieves but well-trained police officers.
The prosecutors said preliminary investigations link the four to the killing of Mbobu, as the bullets recovered from his body match those issued to Cheruiyot.
Mr Kibiru was told that the Ceska pistol issued to Cheruiyot has since been recovered and subjected to ballistic analysis.
A spent cartridge was recovered at the scene of the murder.
Chief Government Pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor said eight bullets were fired at Mbobu, who was killed while heading to his Karen city home on September 9, 2025.
He was attacked while driving a Toyota Land Cruiser KCA 177W.
Lawyers for the deceased’s family, Senior Counsel Kioko Kilukumi and Gibson Kimani, urged the magistrate to allow the prosecution’s plea, saying police should be given time to dig out the motive for the murder of the lawyer.
Mr Kimani said the killing of Mbobu is a matter of great public interest and that no efforts should be spared to achieve justice.
Police said they are still analysing the phones of the suspects with a view to establishing their links with other suspects.
The suspects did not oppose the detention plea, but urged the court to reduce the 30 days, since the investigations have lasted for a year.
Cheruiyot and Kipkemei said the allegations levelled against them are false.
Mr Kiragu said the prosecution has established a basis for the detention of the four over the tragic killing of the lawyer, who was going about his practice quietly.
In a brief ruling, the magistrate said the prosecution has established a firm basis for the detention of the four.
He, however, reduced the 30 days by half to 15 and ordered that they be detained at Gigiri, Parklands, Kibra and Muthangari respectively.
The matter will be mentioned on October 9, 2026, for further directions.
